June 8th, 2023 Development Update

This week’s Screenshot Challenge winner is forum user ExplorerJB, featuring a F-16 Fighting Falcon. If you’re interested in participating in our weekly Screenshot Challenges, check out the details in the Community section below!

Thank you to everyone who has been participating in the public beta test for Aircraft & Avionics Update 02 (AAU_02). Your feedback and bug reports have been incredibly helpful to the development team as we continue preparing for a target launch date of June 23. We released a new beta build (1.33.7.0) to testers yesterday. In case you missed it, you can see the release notes for this build on our forums here.

AAU_02 isn’t the only upcoming release scheduled for June, though! As seen on the latest Development Roadmap, we will also be launching City Update 02: France (CU_02) on June 19. This update will add new photogrammetry to several French cities including Amiens, Angers, Nantes, Nimes, and Reims as well as a bespoke LFPB Paris Le Bourget airport, home of the upcoming Paris Air Show.

Also launching alongside CU_02 is Local Legend 9: Latécoère 631. This French flying boat once held the world record for the longest non-stop passenger service. There are no surviving models that remain today, not even in museums, so bringing a virtual rendition of this aircraft to Microsoft Flight Simulator is truly an act of historical preservation.

Finally, the Microsoft Flight Simulator Team will be attending FlightSimExpo 2023 starting on June 23. We’ll be sharing more about our involvement with the Expo in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Community Fly-In

June 8 is World Oceans Day, an event to foster public interest in the protection of Earth’s oceans and the sustainable management of their resources! To recognize this occasion, our weekly fly-in will be an island-hopping tour of some Pacific Ocean atolls which received scenery enhancements in World Update 13: Oceania.

This flight will also see us visit the island nation of Kiribati. Our telemetry data shows that Kiribati is home to more Microsoft Flight Simulator players per capita than any other country!

Event details are available here. All are welcome to participate!

Community Video

One of the most unforgettable stories from the world of aviation occurred on January 15, 2009. Following a bird strike that knocked out power to both engines shortly after takeoff, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles successfully landed their Airbus A320 on New York’s Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 people on board.

Recently on YouTube, content creator TmarTn2 attempted to re-create this famous event in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Were his simulated passengers as fortunate as the real passengers from 2009? Watch the video to find out!
