For decades flight simmers have been using external tools, networks and add-ons to further enhance their in-sim experience. Whether it be a virtual multiplayer network with volunteer air traffic controllers, freeware and payware 3rd party add-on modifications, or flight planning tools, there are many ways in which you can expand upon and enhance your time in the virtual cockpit. Here are a few ways in which you can take your simulation experience to a new level of detail:
Online Flight Planner
With the launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 we’ve included a new Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) to allow simmers better control over many aspects of their experience from flight planning, to aircraft weight and balance, and even the inclusion of both worldwide LIDO and FAA airport charts. This has also been made available as a website, where users can create a flight plan before loading into the simulator, before instantly importing the details directly into the aircraft systems.
This is a free tool, which you can try now without owning Microsoft Flight Simulator. You will need to login with an Xbox Live Account to access via the following link: Flight Planner

VATSIM (PC)
For even more depth and interaction in your virtual flying, you might want to look into joining a virtual air traffic control network such as VATSIM. VATSIM brings real-world air traffic control and other pilots into your simulator, adding a social, educational, and realistic element to flying.
VATSIM connects players around the world and lets them interact with real human air traffic controllers as well as other sim pilots. You can fly in a truly dynamic airspace where everything from takeoff procedures right to approach and landing are carefully managed in real time by live controllers.
It is an educational platform for learning flight planning, navigation, and real-time decision-making. Whether you fly for fun or want to build up your skills toward a real-world pilot’s license, VATSIM provides hands-on experience with real people guiding you through every step.
