October 19th 2023, Development Update

This week’s Screenshot Challenge winner is forum user digital896! If you’re interested in participating in our weekly Screenshot Challenges, check out the details in the Community section below!

Earlier today, we released updated versions of Local Legend 9: Latécoère 631 and Local Legend 12: Dornier Do X. You can download these updates via the in-sim Content Manager. You can read the release notes for both of these updates on our forums here.

As a reminder to all Xbox Series X|S flyers out there, we currently have an ongoing public test to help the development team improve stability on the Xbox platform in future builds. This test build does not contain any fixes or improvements to the sim itself, but it does include enhanced data telemetry reporting to send more detailed crash logs to the developers. If you would like to assist your fellow Xbox players in improving the stability of Microsoft Flight Simulator in upcoming releases, please see this forum post for instructions on how to enroll in the Stability Test.

Community Fly-In Friday

One of the most important events in Japanese history is the Meiji Restoration of 1868. It was during this period that Japan experienced very rapid industrialization and modernization. Also during this period, the Emperor relocated Japan’s capital city from Kyoto – which had been the capital for more than 1,000 years – to Edo, which was then renamed to Tokyo (meaning “Eastern Capital”).

As part of this move, thousands of government officials left Kyoto behind, diminishing the city’s economy and prestige. In 1895, to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto (formerly known as Heian-kyō), the local government proposed an annual festival and celebration of different eras of Kyoto’s history. This festival is known as Jidai Matsuri (時代祭) or the “Festival of the Ages” and occurs every year on October 22. Celebrations include a grand parade featuring over 2,000 people dressed in historic costumes representing different eras of Kyoto’s history. Nearly 130 years after it was first celebrated, Jidai Matsuri remains a major cultural event in Kyoto to this day.

For Fly-In Friday this week, our flight will see us fly over Kyoto and visit several other Japanese cities in the Kansai region including Kobe, Osaka, and Nara. Our full stop landing will be at Nagoya, a city that is closely linked to Japan’s aviation industry.

Event details are available here. All are welcome to participate!

Tubeliner Tuesday

Earlier this week Community Manager Matt “Chewwy” conducted the first episode in a new weekly series on our Twitch channel called “Tubeliner Tuesday” focusing on airliners within Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The next episode will take place on Tuesday 24th October, with our focus following on from this week’s Community Fly-In and also featuring a flight in Japan! Routing from Osaka Kansai (RJBB) to Tokyo Haneda (RJTT) in the Boeing 787, we will look at some of the new features brought to this aircraft in Sim Update 13.

Event details are available here.

Community Video

We’re heading down under for this week’s Community Video, as we follow Flight Sim Passion on a journey with Air New Zealand from Wellington (NZWN) to Queenstown (NZQN).

This short one hour flight from the North to South Island is complemented by some incredibly scenic views both on departure and arrival. Flight Sim Passion picks up the intensity with a visual circuit for runway 23 at Queenstown to complete a stunning approach.

We love the editing style in this video, alongside the detailed description of each stage of flight. Thanks for a great trip, Flight Sim Passion!
